Elise’s dissertation, “The Body Nevertheless Communicates: Contemporary Latinx Poetry as Performance,” examines contemporary Latinx poetry through performance studies and digital humanities lenses. The central research questions are: “What does poetry reveal within Latinx studies?” and, conversely: “What does Latinx studies reveal in poetry?” At the most general level, the goal is to understand their implications for each other and for literary studies by centering Latinx literature within literary studies and poetry within Latinx literature. The dissertation thus proposes an intervention in both the study of poetry and poetics and Latinx studies by initiating an underexplored and much delayed conversation.
