Arts and Sciences | Darden | Engineering | National Fellowship
Established in 2001, the Jefferson Fellowship is the premier graduate fellowship offered at the University of Virginia. Based solely on merit, Jefferson Fellowships are designed to identify Ph.D. and M.B.A. candidates who demonstrate outstanding achievement and the highest promise as scholars, teachers, public servants, and business leaders in the United States and beyond. Once selected, Jefferson Fellows are charged with furthering the quality of education, intellectual life, and mission of the University.
Jefferson Fellows receive the cost of attending the University, living and research stipends, space to engage in research and collaborative conversation, and a variety of professional development and enrichment opportunities.
Graduate School of Arts and Sciences
Current graduate students who have advanced to doctoral candidacy during the current academic year, or who have a faculty-endorsed plan for achieving candidacy prior to the fellowship period, are invited to apply for a Jefferson Fellowship.
Fellows in the Graduate School of Arts & Sciences will receive:
- A stipend in the amount equivalent to the recipient’s standard living support from GSAS (for two years)
- Research funds of $5,000
- Exemption from all assistantship responsibilities (i.e., GTA or GRA) during the Fellowship period
- Health insurance
Darden School of Business
Fellows in the Darden Graduate School of Business will receive:
- A living stipend of approximately $20,000 renewable for two years
- Research and travel funds up to $7,000
- Full tuition remittance
- Health insurance
Graduate School of Engineering and Applied Science
Fellows in the Graduate School of Engineering and Applied Sciences will receive:
- A living stipend of $30,000 to $37,500 depending on the field
- Research funds up to $2,500
- Full tuition remittance
- Health insurance
National Fellowship Program
National Fellows will receive:
- One year of support for dissertation research and writing
- A stipend of $25,000
- Mentoring from a renowned senior scholar in the field
- Invitations to two annual conferences, one in the fall and the second in the spring
