Endowments
The Jefferson Scholars Foundation currently accepts nominations in 53 domestic regions, two international regions, and a group of “designated schools” with funds endowed to support Jefferson Scholars from those schools. Between 2008 and 2010 the Foundation was able to offer scholarships in seven new regions: Jacksonville, Florida; Tampa, Florida; and Kansas City, Missouri were added in 2008. London, England; Mississippi; and Rhode Island were added in 2009, and Colorado became our newest region in the fall of 2010.
All of these regions have been created since 1980 through the generosity of University alumni and friends. Such private support has always been the backbone of funding efforts for Jefferson Scholarships and Jefferson Graduate Fellowships. Gifts from thousands of individuals, along with dozens of corporations and foundations, have helped the Foundation fulfill its mission.
Over the 30-year lifespan of the Jefferson Scholars program, supporters have cited innumerable reasons for their decision to get involved. Many see supporting the Foundation as a way to support the University of Virginia not only by attracting outstanding leaders, scholars, and citizens to Charlottesville, but also by raising the University’s profile in their own hometowns through the regional selection process. Others note the Foundation’s core focus on excellence; still others refer to its reputation for outstanding stewardship and fiscal responsibility. The potential to leave a legacy via an endowed gift is also identified as an important factor. When asked, most benefactors get back to a central theme: their mental and emotional associations with the University of Virginia center on people, and the Jefferson Scholars Foundation is about people.
The Jefferson Scholars Foundation offers its benefactors the opportunity to name scholarships and fellowships. A named Jefferson Scholarship or Jefferson Graduate Fellowship may be created with a gift of $500,000. Darden Fellowships have a naming level of $1,000,000.
