Foundation Hosts First Alumni Reunion
124 Alumni Attend Weekend's Festivities

October 3 , 2005 | The Jefferson Scholars Foundation hosted its first Alumni Reunion September 29-October 2 in Charlottesville. One hundred twenty-four alumni, or approximately 31% of all Jefferson Scholar graduates, took part in the festivities.

The Alumni Reunion began on September 29 with the presentation of the inaugural Jefferson Scholars Faculty Award. This prize, which will be given annually, was bestowed upon R. Jahan Ramazani, William R. Kenan Jr. Professor of English, for his contributions to the University community and his embodiment of the ideals of leadership, scholarship, and citizenship. Mr. Ramazani received $5,000 and was invited to lecture on his views regarding these three qualities.

Mr. Ramazani's lecture included reflections on his own student experience at the University, the element of service in teaching, and the evolution of his perceptions of leadership, scholarship, and citizenship. He encouraged the audience to consider how they will "fight the world's fight."

Events of Friday, September 30 included remarks by Patricia Lampkin, Vice President for Student Affairs, about student life at the University past and present. Class dinners that evening afforded former Scholars and significant others to relive past experiences and catch up.

The morning of Saturday, October 1 was spent at the Darden Graduate School of Business, with morning panel discussions on business, law, art and culture, education, and international affairs. Jefferson Scholars Foundation President Jimmy Wright followed with State of the Foundation remarks, noting the growth of the program over 25 years and its bright future. A buffet lunch preceded wine tastings and children's activities before an evening party at Alumni Hall.

The reunion concluded with a brunch on Sunday, October 2.

Planning for the Alumni Reunion was done by a group of class representatives, headed by Sara Neher '96, Director of the Undergraduate Program.
