New Class of Jefferson Graduate Fellows Welcomed
Nine Enter the University, in Eight Different Disciplines
August 21, 2006 | The Jefferson Scholars Foundation welcomed the new entering class of nine Jefferson Fellows with a reception at Jefferson Vineyards. The group, which will pursue studies in eight respective disciplines, holds degrees from eleven different colleges and universities.
Included are the first Jefferson Fellows in the Darden Graduate School of Business. The Jefferson Scholars Foundation and the Darden School embarked upon a cooperative program in 2005.
The merit-based Jefferson Fellowships provide stipends over the course of doctoral study at the University of Virginia (or MBA or JD, in the case of Darden Jefferson Fellows and Jefferson Law Fellows), along with additional research funding. Recipients are nominated by their respective departments or schools and ultimately chosen at Graduate Selection Weekend, held annually in February. The sole selection criteria are demonstrated academic excellence and a willingness to share one's passion with a broad audience.
The first class of Jefferson Fellows entered the University in 2001. With the addition of the new class, there are now 30 Jefferson Fellows in residence in the Graduate School of Arts & Sciences, the School of Law, and the Darden School.
