Jennifer Cano '09 Wins Goldwater Scholarship
One of 317 Recipients From a Field of 1,110 Mathematics, Science, and Engineering Students
March 26 , 2007 | Jennifer Ann Cano '09, the Stanley G. Mortimer III Jefferson Scholar, has been named a 2007-2008 Goldwater Scholar by the Board of Trustees of the Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence in Education Foundation.
Three hundred seventeen scholarships were awarded to outstanding undergraduate sophomores and juniors across the United States. Recipients were selected based on the basis of academic merit from a field of 1,110 mathematics, science, and engineering students nominated by the faculties of colleges and universities nationwide. Virtually all recipients intend to obtain a Ph.D. as their degree objective.
Cano, from Wallingford, Connecticut, is a second-year Physics and Mathematics double major. Her goal is to obtain a Ph.D. and conduct research in pure mathematics, mathematical physics, or high energy or particle physics
while teaching at the university level.
Goldwater Scholarships cover the cost of tuition, fees, books, and room and board up to a maximum of $7,500 per year.
Recent Goldwater Scholars have been awarded 69 Rhodes Scholarships, 86 Marshall Scholarships, and numerous other distinguished fellowships. The Goldwater Scholarship program, honoring the late Senator Barry M. Goldwater, is designed to foster and encourage outstanding students to pursue careers in the fields of mathematics, the natural sciences, and engineering.
In its nineteen-year history, the Goldwater Foundation has awarded 5,202 scholarships worth approximately fifty-one million dollars.
