96 Finalists Participate in Undergraduate National Selection Weekend
This year’s NSW was held on Grounds March 17-20
March 21, 2005 | They came from across the country, Alaska included, and three foreign countries. They hailed from big cities and small towns, from small rural high schools, large urban schools, and independent schools.
As in years past, these high school seniors came for the mix of tests, roundtable discussions, presentations, sightseeing, and peer bonding that marks the Jefferson Scholars Foundation’s annual National Selection Weekend. This year’s NSW was held on Grounds March 17-20.
More than anything, the ninety-six finalists came for the opportunity to earn a coveted Jefferson Scholarship, which rewards recipients with a full four-year scholarship to attend the University of Virginia.
At the conclusion of the four days, 44 of the finalists were offered Jefferson Scholarships.
Beginning on Thursday, finalists met each other as well as current Jefferson Scholars, and had a chance to attend classes and meet faculty. On Friday, finalists attended a series of presentations, visited student organizations, and toured the Grounds and Monticello. A math exam and essay exercise also were part of the day.
On Saturday, finalists participated in group discussions with faculty moderators; this year’s discussions covered preassigned readings on the World War II Memorial and Title IX legislation.
A final round of interviews concluded the activities on Sunday. Those offered scholarships received e-mail notification on Monday, March 21; they have until April 20 to accept.
