Scholar passes torch to Scholar:
Adom Getachew named 2008-09 Student Member of the Board of Visitors

Adom Getachew
Jefferson Scholar
Class of 2009

February 12, 2008 | Third year student  and William H. P. Young Scholar Adom Getachew was appointed 2008-09 Student Member of the Board of Visitors this weekend.

The Student Member serves as a sounding board for the Board of Visitors with regard to issues that affect students at the University. Although the Student Member does not have a vote on the Board, full members consider his or her voice equally among the opinions of others. Consequently, the Student Member must actively assess and predict the general student reaction to the Board's decisions. Getachew’s one-year term will begin in the spring.

A double major in the Politics Honors program and African-American and African Studies, Getachew has pursued her extracurricular involvement with similar vigor. She participates in the Resident Staff Program as a Resident Advisor in the first year dormitories, serves as a Peer Advisor for the Office of African-American Affairs, and is active in Sustained Dialogue. In addition to her involvement within the University community, Getachew runs a local tutoring/mentoring program at Jack Jouett Middle School and serves as a volunteer at Buford Middle School. A native of Ethiopia, Getachew grew up in Arlington, Virginia.

Getachew will replace 2007-08 Student Member Carey Mignerey, J. Mack Robinson Scholar from the class of 2004. Mignerey is currently in his second year at the University’s law school.
