Awarded solely on the basis of merit, Jefferson Scholars Graduate Fellowships are granted to the most exceptional candidates who have applied for admission to the University of Virginia's doctoral and terminal degree programs in the Graduate School of Arts & Sciences as well as the M.B.A. program of the Darden Graduate School of Business.
Working closely with the departments, who nominate their most outstanding applicants, the Jefferson Scholars Foundation, the Graduate School of Arts & Sciences, and the Darden School invite the finalists to Charlottesville in late February for the Jefferson Graduate Fellows Selection Weekend.
Selection Weekend includes meetings with prospective mentors and graduate student colleagues, an opportunity to visit graduate workshops, a tour of the Teaching Resource Center, and dinner in the Dome Room of the Rotunda.
For finalists in Arts & Sciences, the weekend concludes with the final interview, which begins with a presentation on an issue or idea of the candidate's choosing. Darden finalists participate in a case review, followed by a final interview.
The Jefferson Graduate Fellowship Selection Committee includes both faculty and University alumni. The Committee awards Jefferson Graduate Fellowships to those candidates who demonstrate the most potential as scholars and show an eagerness and willingness to share important ideas with a broad audience. In most cases the University offers other prestigious fellowships to the finalists not selected as Jefferson Graduate Fellows.
