For 2007-08 each Jefferson Fellow receives tuition, fees, health insurance, and a living stipend totaling $30,000. Additionally, the Fellows may apply for research funds up to $7,500 throughout the course of their fellowships to support dissertation work. The fellowship is renewable annually to support a Jefferson Fellow through five years of graduate study at the University.
Professional Development Opportunities
Jefferson Fellows Symposium
During the annual recruitment weekend, each second year Fellow will present his or her research for comment to a panel consisting of a faculty member outside the discipline, another Jefferson Fellow, and an undergraduate Jefferson Scholar. The conference is open to the entire University community, and candidates competing for the Fellowship are also invited to share their thoughts. The conference is designed to give each Fellow experience presenting original work for critical feedback in a public setting, as will be expected within most disciplines. It also exposes the student’s work to scholars and approaches outside of a chosen field.
Dissertation Colloquium
Each Fellow has the opportunity during his or her tenure to organize a short colloquia series featuring that individual who is known as the world’s leading scholar on the Fellow’s dissertation topic. The Fellow is responsible for selecting and contacting the scholar, coordinating his or her visit to the University with the department and other local experts, and designing a series of intellectually stimulating and engaging events organized around the topic. The central feature of the series will be the scholar’s public comment on the Fellow’s dissertation. Timing of the colloquium will be determined by the Fellow; however, it is expected that such an event would take place within one to two years of defense.
Interdisciplinary Faculty Connections
Each Fellow may identify one or more of the University’s most distinguished faculty members outside of the Fellow’s home department whose work relates in some way to his or her own for introduction by a member of the Foundation’s Faculty Advisory Committee. This introduction is intended to allow each Fellow to solicit feedback on his or her research from alternate perspectives and to broaden his or her intellectual resources at the University.
Speaker Series
Jefferson Fellows participate in specific professional development opportunities that complement the academic training provided by the University. These include special lectures and discussions with distinguished University faculty members and presentations by business, civic and academic leaders. |
