FAQ
Q: What are the terms of the Fellowship?

A: Each Jefferson Fellowship provides a $30,000 living stipend, tuition, fees, and health insurance, and is renewable for five years. Additionally, each Fellow may apply for up to $7,500 in additional funding to defray research costs during his/her tenure.

Q: What are the selection criteria?

A: The two criteria for Jefferson Fellowships are exceptional potential as a scholar, and an eagerness and ability to share important ideas with a wide range of people.

Q: How do I apply for the Jefferson Fellowship?

A. You should apply directly to the department in which you plan to study. Following the application deadline, each eligible department will nominate those candidates from the applicant pool who they feel best meet the criteria. If you are nominated by your department, someone from that department will contact you in early February.

Q: Are all departments within the University eligible for Jefferson Fellowships?

A: Eligible departments are: all departments within the Graduate School of Arts & Sciences and the Darden Graduate School of Business.

Jefferson Fellows in the Darden School typically do not teach.

Q: If I am selected to be a Jefferson Fellow, am I allowed to accept other scholarship/fellowship aid?

A: Yes. The Foundation makes no restrictions on the amount of aid a student may bring with him/her.

Q: If I am awarded another fellowship that does not allow me to accept additional aid (e.g., a Mellon or National Science Foundation award), can I still accept a Jefferson Fellowship?

A: Yes. In most cases, we would simply add a year to the student’s funding. However, each case is dealt with individually and should be discussed with the Jefferson Scholars Foundation staff and faculty from your department.

Q: Is financial need a criterion for nomination or selection?

A: No. Nominations by the various departments and ultimate selection as a Jefferson Fellow are based on the record established by the candidate.
