The $100 million Jefferson Scholars Capital Campaign will ensure the long-term future of the Foundation and provide a wide range of programmatic enhancements to the benefit of Scholars, Fellows, and the University of Virginia.
The campaign is part of the University’s broad-based $3 billion campaign that will run through 2011. As has always been the case, gifts made to the Jefferson Scholars Foundation will be recognized also as gifts to the University, and may include reunion and planned gifts.
There are two primary goals of the Jefferson Scholars Capital Campaign:
- $50 million for undergraduate Jefferson Scholarships. Scheduled increases in tuition and fees, combined with a planned growth in the number of Scholars in residence from 120 to 160, will require additional endowment. Geographic expansion and increased funding for existing competition regions will bolster high school participation and allow additional outstanding candidates to compete. Programmatic enhancements such as internships, leadership and citizenship training, an community projects will enrich the Jefferson Scholar experience.
- $50 million for graduate Jefferson Fellowships. Creating a nationally recognized Graduate Fellowship program that will attract the nation’s leading graduate students to the Grounds will allow the Jefferson Scholar Foundation to take the lead in addressing the University’s most critical current need, improving graduate education. Securing sufficient funding to increase the number of Jefferson Fellows in residence to 100 and expanding the Fellowship competition to new disciplines will immeasurably enhance Mr. Jefferson’s intellectual community.
Over the past quarter-century, alumni and friends of the University of Virginia have recognized that the University benefits from the exceptional level of intellect, integrity, and leadership brought to the Grounds by Jefferson Scholars and Fellows. Continued private support is necessary to allow the Foundation to continue its vital work.
