Jefferson Scholars Foundation University of Virginia

Leadership, Scholarship, Citizenship
Thomas Jefferson
Firm in his belief that individual talent and initiative must be the chief qualifications for leadership, Thomas Jefferson envisioned the University of Virginia as a training ground for those who would take on the burdens of responsibility in a free society.

The fundamental mission of the Jefferson Scholars Foundation is to identify, attract, and nurture individuals of extraordinary intellectual range and depth who possess the highest qualities of leadership, scholarship, and citizenship. We seek those with great promise, and give them sufficient financial support so they are free to develop their talents and to use them for the good of the University community.

The Jefferson Scholars Foundation offers two avenues for such individuals. For undergraduates, the Jefferson Scholarship is awarded to up to thirty-five persons annually after a rigorous nomination and selection process. Demonstrated excellence and exceptional potential in the areas of leadership, scholarship, and citizenship are the only selection criteria.

Candidates for the Jefferson Graduate Fellowship come from the universe of applicants to the University's Graduate School of Arts & Sciences as well as the Darden Graduate School of Business. Approximately ten Jefferson Fellowships per year are awarded. In addition to an exceptional academic record, candidates have a passion for sharing their knowledge with a broader audience.
