The Jefferson Scholars Foundation honored two faculty members in the University of Virginia’s School of Engineering and Applied Science with 2010 Hartfield-Jefferson Scholars Teaching Prizes.

Mark S. Sherriff, assistant professor in the Department of Computer Science, and Mary Beck, lecturer in applied mathematics and director of student affairs for the Engineering School’s undergraduate program, have been awarded cash prizes.

Sherriff and Beck will each receive $12,500 for their hard work, determination and excellence in teaching students in their respective fields, the foundation said in its announcement.

“Each of our winners inspires and supports our students, certainly, but each of them also represents the highest ideal of academic practice – not only to teach, but to teach well,” foundation president James Wright said.
