Emily J. Charnock

B.A., Honors., University of Oxford, UK

M.A., American University, Washington, D.C.

Emily will spend next year as a Fellow at the Miller Center of Public Affairs, completing her dissertation “From Ghosts to Shadows: The National Party Organizations and Interest Groups.”  This project explores the evolving relationship between parties and interest groups from the New Deal to the present.

“I appreciate personal aspects of the fellowship: firstly, in terms of the sense of community it offers, the opportunity to meet interesting people in diverse fields … and to share perspectives has been fantastic – and now, with the Fellows center, there is even greater opportunity to do this. Secondly, having the Foundation staff right here in Charlottesville adds to that sense of community – they are always available to provide support and encouragement. Finally, that the donors who generously fund our fellowships are involved and invested at all levels of the program – financially and substantively – is a fantastic asset. The opportunity to discuss your work with the person who is making your graduate studies possible is really fantastic and, I think, unique.”
