“The Jefferson Scholars program has influenced me in innumerable ways and being a Jefferson Scholar was (and will continue to be) a singularly transformative experience in my personal and professional development. Of these influences, I would emphasize three that have been particularly foundational.
“First, I would be hard-pressed again to find and be surrounded by the collective intelligence and energy possessed by my fellow Jefferson Scholars. The sheer intellectual capacity and curiosity and level of devotion to social change exhibited by my peers reminded me daily then - and continues to now - of my responsibility as an educated and privileged citizen to use my talents, however vast or limited, wisely for the maximum benefit of others.
“Second, the day-to-day, informal conversations I had with my fellow Jefferson Scholars - often about their passions and dreams - inspired me to hold myself to an ever-higher and increasing standard for my own passions and dreams. Hearing my supremely talented peers dream big and aim high, and watching them realize these dreams and goals and stretch even further, pushed me then and fuels me now to believe that anything is possible through the combination of dreams, passion, and vigor.
“And third, but only in numerical order, the tenets and expectations of the Foundation - excellence in leadership, citizenship, scholarship - created a set of guiding principles for my choices and actions. Though I still often feel I am not doing enough, the Foundation’s bar of Jeffersonian excellence helps me make day-to-day decisions and to select the endeavors to which I commit my time and energy. I can think of no better set of principles by which to live my life.”
