“Why did I accept the Jefferson Fellowship? My visit to U.Va. during the Jefferson Fellows Selection Weekend was crucial.  I was very impressed by the faculty and graduate students in my department and the Jefferson committee drove home the idea that the Jefferson Fellowship is fundamentally about intellectual exchange.  It is entirely merit-based, ranges across many fields, and the only obligation of the Fellows is to continue to do well.  The Jefferson Fellowship message of making our work accessible to a public audience sets it apart from more insular academic communities and the Jefferson Fellows are an impressive group of passionate and intelligent individuals.  I am lucky to have the opportunity to join them!”

“The Jefferson Fellowship gives you the opportunity to set yourself apart, even at as prestigious an institution as U.Va.  Each Jefferson Fellow is a smart, motivated individual with interesting stories to share. The committee is welcoming and interested in each individual and his/her work.  After I had won the scholarship, each member of my committee personally contacted me to express their congratulations and encourage me to accept the award.”
