Engineers Get ‘Footloose’

More than a dozen engineering students cut the rug, in both practical and aesthetic senses, this fall as U.Va. First Year Players performed an emotionally invigorating rendition of the musical “Footloose.”

Engineers served in such varied roles as prop charge, master carpenter, publicity chair and director. Others played in the orchestra and three engineers held starring parts in the musical. The production offered them a venue for applying problem-solving skills in real and creative ways.

Wayne Dell (SE ’12) starred as Ren, a Chicagoan who moves to a small town, and overnight is at odds with everyone — for dancing! Beaumont’s citizens outlawed disco, break dance, mosh pits and all such jive after four 18-year-olds were killed in a vehicle accident following a dance. Dell captivated the audience with his singing and dancing skills, bringing them to their feet on several occasions.
